Online survey
You’ll answer questions through an online form.
- Usually takes 5–30 minutes
- Can be completed anytime before the deadline
- No interaction with a researcher
Telephone interview
You’ll speak with a researcher over the phone.
- Scheduled in advance
- Typically lasts 30–60 minutes
- You’ll be asked questions and share your experiences
Telephone interview (with computer access)
Similar to a phone interview, but you may also need to:
- Access a website or materials during the call
- Share feedback in real time while using your device
Online discussion board
You’ll participate in a moderated online forum over several days.
- Log in daily to answer questions or complete tasks
- Interact with other participants in some cases
- Flexible timing within each day
Focus group
You’ll join a small group discussion led by a moderator.
- Can be online or in person
- Usually lasts 100–180 minutes
- You may be asked to share opinions and react to others
In-person interview
You’ll meet a researcher at a specific location.
- Scheduled ahead of time
- May involve activities, product testing, or discussions
- Duration varies depending on the study

- You’ll always receive details (timing, format, requirements) before participating
- Some studies may require a webcam, microphone, or specific device
- You may be asked to complete a short pre-work assignment before the session (such as answering questions or preparing materials)
- In some cases, you may also receive homework after the session, like follow-up tasks or additional feedback
